What is a Medicare Advantage plan?
Medicare Advantage plans are Medicare plans offered by private insurance companies. They are also known as Medicare Part C. You need to have Medicare Parts A and B to join a Medicare Advantage plan. Medicare Advantage plans are required all services in Original Medicare except Hospice care. Hospice will always be covered by Original Medicare.
Types of Medicare Advantage plans:
- HMO plans – Members have to go to contracted providers except in the case of an emergency. Many HMO plans require referrals to see specialists.
- PPO plans – Members have the option to see in-network or out of network providers. Generally, you will pay more if you go to out of network providers. There are no referrals required.
- HMO-POS(Point of Service) – POS plans allow you to go to out of network providers for some services. Generally, you will pay more if you go out of network.
- PFFS (Private Fee for Service) plans – Most plans don’t have provider networks. Providers have to accept the terms and conditions of the plan.
Special Needs Plans (SNP):
Special Needs Plans are Medicare Advantage plans for people with specific conditions. Types of Special Needs Plans are:
- Dual SNPs – Are for people who have both Medicare and Medicaid.
- Chronic SNPs – Are for people who have a specific chronic condition.
- Institutional SNPs – Are for people who live in an institution.
Special Needs Plans can be HMO, POS or PPO plans. All SNPs include Part D.
Why should I enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan?
- Most Medicare Advantage plans include Part D(Prescription Drugs). With Original Medicare, you would have to enroll in a stand alone Part D plan and pay a monthly premium.
- All Medicare Advantage plans have a maximum out of pocket amount. Original Medicare does not have an out of pocket limit.
- Many Medicare Advantage plans include additional benefits which Original Medicare does not. Benefits such as dental, vision, free gym memberships, and hearing.
